the 50 mile, 4 wheel odessey
What a trip! I bought a book on 4 wheel trails in march and began pouring over each page, highlighting and codeing each entry with color coded highlighters and post its...I read every page and wrote up itineraries for trips we could take as soon as the trails opened in May/June. Needless to say, I was very excited and had every detail planned.
We get there and the men decide (aka doug) we should take a different route. I thought it was a 26 mile one-way trip and he said that was the round trip mileage so off we go. Over one pass and through 20 foot snow drifts when we finally realized I was right on the mileage. At this point we had to think about what to do. We decided to go on to Lake City, got there at 5:30 p.m. with 26 miles and a pass still to go over by sundown with a 4 and 2 year old, no food or heavy jackets...needless to say, it was a little scarey. Just as we're pulling out of Lake City for seven highway miles when we realize Doug has a major flat. Miraculously, we found someone to fix it and we made it back to the trailer by 8 p.m. CRAZY Trip.
